West Hills Country Club Wedding // Heather + Matt

Oh, the soft spots in my heart that my people occupy…I’m surprised my heart hasn’t just absolutely turned to mush by now. Heather and Matt hold one of those soft spots. They were kind and welcoming and warm from beginning to end. Their wedding felt like home - safe and enveloping. They were easy to celebrate, and easy to care for.

THE COUPLE

Heather and Matt knew each other in high school, but didn’t start dating until 2019 when they reconnected via Instagram (ah, the power of social media). They’re warm souls whom you instantly feel safe around. They compliment each other perfectly, and support each other endlessly. They not only look for the best in each other, but very clearly admire each other. It’s obvious that they are equal partners in life.

They were a true joy to photograph because they were so clearly in love, and just happy to be there together on their wedding day.

THE VENUE

I’ve blogged about weddings at West Hills Country Club in Middletown, NY, but, honestly, the location never gets old. The golf course is so large and beautiful that there is no shortage of new locations to use for photos. The staff does such an amazing job with each wedding, and the tented reception space is just gorgeous.

One of the biggest advantages to getting married at West Hills is that the tent can either be air conditioned or heated, which is especially great for fall weddings like Heather and Matt’s. Although October is unfailingly beautiful in the Hudson Valley, the temperatures can be unpredictable, and so having access to a reception space that feels outdoorsy but can still be comfortable in any weather is a huge plus.

THE DETAILS

Heather and Matt chose red and blush tones for the aesthetic of their wedding day, with the bridesmaids wearing different gowns within that color scheme and the groomsmen wearing burgundy ties with their navy suits. The day was chilly! But you would never know from how willing and joyful the entire wedding party was to jump in photos with the couple.

Heather and Matt’s first look was one of the “moment” details that felt like an incredible joy and honor to witness. Their loved ones stood nearby as we photographed their first look, and it was just such an adorable thing to see their friends and family quietly cheering them on while they were completely immersed in seeing each other for the first time.

Moments like these with people like these are the heart of weddings, and it always excites my heart to be able to be there for them.

THE RECEPTION

One of my very favorite receptions, hands down. The speeches were kind and heartfelt. The guests were excited and enjoyable. Matt sang on the DJ’s microphone in the middle of the crowd. I could have stayed for hours upon hours.

When I think back on Heather and Matt’s beautiful October wedding day, I vividly remember Heather’s gorgeous eyes taking everything in. Every sweet word Matt said to her. Every kind direction we offered her. She was eager and endearing, and Matt took care of her at every opportunity. Their love was a gift to witness. A gift to document.

How are we already coming up on two years, dear ones?

FROM THE COUPLE

“Erica was recommended to us by my sister-in-law who works in the wedding industry as a makeup artist. When we first looked at Erica's Instagram, we were impressed. She really captured the essence of each couple. Then we inquired and had our first meeting with her via Zoom, and we were instantly sold. We had met with a few other photographers, but no one made us feel at ease like Erica did.

Erica has a bright and calming energy. We knew she would be a positive influence on our day, but would also be able to take control and get us the photos we wanted. From the minute we hired Erica, she showed us just how much she cares about her clients. She checked in at the right times and helped us plan our timeline.

On the big day, everything she did was exactly what we needed. She kept that calm atmosphere, and was so encouraging. I'm not super confident in front of the camera, but she made me feel like I was a model on our big day, lol. She was right where we needed her for every important moment, as well as her second shooter. Then, we had our sneak peek photos super early the day after, and my mouth literally hit the floor. They were all so beautiful and just captured us perfectly. I can't wait to get the rest of them! We are so happy we went with Erica!!! I cannot recommend her enough.”
